Pyorrhoea An infection that damages gums and can destroy the jawbone. Periodontitis or pyorrhoea is a common problem but is preventable. The cause is usually poor oral hygiene. Pyorrhoea can lead to tooth loss if neglected. Pyorrhoea is also a risk factor for heart and lungs disease also. Usually common in middle age and in pregnant women. Symptoms include swollen, red and tender gums, bad breath or halitosis, toothache, loose teeth, receding gums, bleeding gums during brushing. Prevention includes maintaining good oral hygiene by regular brushing the teeth twice a day, use of chlorhexidine mouthwash, scaling or professional teeth cleaning once in every six to nine months. Treatment includes scaling or professional cleaning around teeth to prevent damage to surrounding bone. Advanced cases may require curettage, root planing and gums surgery.
